Playing by Google’s Rules
As of today, April 21, 2015, Google’s Rules are changing. You may need to update your web site, ASAP. Your web site may not appear on searches that it used to appear on. How does this impact you? What can you do to update your web site to be relevant?
Make sure your site is responsive and/or Mobile Friendly. This means, you can resize the site to fit any size browser (phone, tablet, small laptop, large computer screen). You can easily test this with your current web site by changing the size of the web browser window. Does the site dynamically change and adapt to fit into the size of the window? If not, do you know if you have a special version of your site for mobile devices? If you don’t, get on this right away. Over half of online traffic now comes from mobile devices, and your business needs to be relevant in this new world.
This is also an opportunity to test your web site on your phone and see just what it looks like to visitors that find you on their phones. Can you get around the site easily? Put yourself in their shoes. Can you get to what you want to know, right away? Ask a few friends to check your site for you. Can they find what they would want to know, easily? This doesn’t have to turn into a major site overhaul, but it is an opportunity to address a growing customer base that visits your web site.
In all seriousness, if you run a WordPress web site, make sure you update to the most recent version, and also update any of your plugins that need an update. There are a few nasty exploits out there that have been recently patched, and you can use this as an opportunity to patch your web site. If you need a new WordPress theme, make sure the theme says it’s “Responsive” in order to handle Google’s new rules.
